Italy 2003 Italian Wood Carving Symposiums In July 2003, Claidhbh was invited to compete in an international woodcarving symposium in the town of Auronzo in Northern Italy – along with Ben Russell, another wood carver from Co. Cork. He set off for Italy not really knowing much about what lay ahead of him. On arrival, he met up with other woodcarvers from all over the world, 30 in all! Each sculptor was assigned to a location in the town and given a log of native wood and told to get to work. Six days later the sculptures were adjudicated by a team of judges – Claidhbh was awarded first prize with his ‘Spirit of Auronzo’! Following from this success, he was invited to return to Italy to the town of Asiago to compete once again. So in August his bags were packed again and he headed back to Italy. This time he took third prize with ‘Celtic Wedding Ring’ In July 2004, Claidhbh and Ben returned to Auronzo once again and worked hard for another week of competition. Claidhbh’s project this time was ‘A Celtic Hunter’ and although it wasn’t awarded any prize, it remains on view in Auronzo as does his work from previous years. Claidhbh is already looking forward to this year’s trip to Auronzo.
